Earthquake in Turkey and Syria: death toll exceeds 20,000

 More than 20,000 people died in the violent earthquake that shook southern Turkey and Syria on Monday, according to the latest official reports this Thursday evening, February 9.



According to the Turkish relief agency Afad, 17,134 bodies have been excavated from the rubble at this stage, and 3,162 have been counted in Syria, according to official counts, bringing the total number of deaths to 20,296.


The earthquake thus becomes the sixth most deadly of the last 20 years, after that of Bam, which had more than 31,000 victims on December 26, 2003 in Iran. Those of December 26, 2004 off Sumatra (Indonesia) and January 12, 2010 in Haiti remain the most serious earthquakes in recent years with 230,000 and 200,000 deaths respectively. Then come those of Sichuan (May 12, 2008, 87,000 dead) and Kashmir (October 8, 2005, 73,000 victims).
