A senior Turkish official announced on Friday that Ankara will no longer block the path of migrants who want to go to Europe. The decision to "open the doors" came after an emergency security meeting chaired by Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Thursday night, while Turkish media outlets indicated that groups of immigrants on Friday morning headed towards the Greek border.
A senior Turkish official confirmed on Friday that Turkey will no longer stop migrants trying to go to Europe from crossing the border.
The same source said, "We will no longer keep the doors closed to immigrants who want to go to Europe."
The decision to "open the doors" was taken during an emergency security meeting chaired by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Thursday night.
The meeting was held after the killing of at least 33 Turkish military personnel in the Idlib area in northwestern Syria in air strikes attributed by Ankara to the Syrian army forces supported by Russia.
And Turkish media reported earlier that groups of migrants were heading Friday morning towards the border with Greece in western Turkey. A local news agency said that about 300 immigrants from Syria, Iraq and Iran arrived in Edirne Governorate on the Greek borders.
And Turkey has repeatedly threatened to "open doors" to Europe for immigrants, what observers see as a means of pressure on the European Union countries that are still under the weight of the immigration crisis in the summer of 2015.
