Niger's coup form a new government

The military authorities emerging from the coup in Niger have formed a government, according to a statement issued by the country's new strongman, General Abderrahmane Tiane, broadcast on national television on Wednesday night to Thursday.

The government, which was announced before the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) held a crucial summit Thursday in Abuja, consists of 21 members and is led by the Prime Minister, who was previously appointed by the putschists on Monday, Ali Al-Amin.

It includes twenty ministers, and its defense and interior ministers are Generals Saliva Modi and Mohamed Tomba from the military council that seized power.

The ECOWAS leaders will hold a summit Thursday in the Nigerian capital, after the expiration of the deadline they set for the putschists in Niger to "restore constitutional order" without achieving a result.

And the regional organization warned on Tuesday that it would take "important decisions" during this summit, announcing the priority of diplomacy in the search for a settlement to the crisis in Niger while maintaining threats of military intervention.
