French police use tear gas to quell protests of yellow jackets

The yellow vests movement returned to demonstrate in the streets of the French capital, Paris, after the Corona virus crisis curbed its activity, and the French police deployed heavily in Paris, today, Saturday, using tear gas.

Hundreds of demonstrators gathered in two squares in Paris, according to Reuters, to participate in two authorized rallies.

One of the marches was delayed after police used tear gas to disperse protesters who did not adhere to the specified path, and some of them set garbage bins and a car on fire.

The same source added that the authorities banned protests in a downtown area, including the Champs-Elysées, which witnessed riots at the height of the Yellow Vest movement nearly two years ago, when anger over the imposition of fuel taxes and President Emmanuel Macron's style of rule drove hundreds of thousands to the streets across France.

Police said they had arrested 154 protesters by 1:00 pm local time (11:00 GMT).

The resumption of the yellow vest protests coincides with France's efforts to contain an increase in the number of coronavirus infections.

Daily infections with Covid-19 disease reached a record high on Thursday, reaching about 10,000, and the number of people receiving treatment in hospital has steadily increased this month.
