Corona virus arrives in sub-Saharan Africa after Nigeria announces first infection

The Nigerian Health Ministry confirmed on Friday that it recorded the first infection with the Coronavirus, the first of its kind in sub-Saharan Africa. This concerns an Italian citizen working in Nigeria, who returned to them from Milan on February 25.


Friday, the first case of coronavirus was confirmed in Nigeria, according to the Ministry of Health, the first of its kind in sub-Saharan Africa.

The Ministry confirmed on Twitter that there is an HIV infection in Lagos State. "This case, which was confirmed on 27 February 2020, is the first to be registered in Nigeria since the beginning of the epidemic," she said.

She indicated that the injured is an Italian citizen working in Nigeria and had returned to the country from the Italian city of Milan on February 25. The Ministry confirmed that he was hospitalized in Lagos and that his condition was stable and "he did not have any disturbing symptoms."

This is the first infection in sub-Saharan Africa.

Two other cases were recorded in recent days in Egypt and Algeria, without any deaths so far reported from the continent due to the virus.
