EU sends reinforcements to France to fight fires

Forest fires continue to ravage the south-west of the country. To deal with it, France will receive reinforcements in planes and firefighters from the EU as well as from five European countries.

The fire that has been raging in Gironde since August 9 has burned more than 6,800 hectares of forest in two days. On the front, some 1,100 firefighters are mobilized with particularly unfavorable weather conditions, said Thursday August 11 the prefect of Gironde, Fabienne Buccio.

Before nightfall on Wednesday, eight major fires were burning in France, in Gironde, but also in Maine-et-Loire, Jura, Drôme, Aveyron and Lozère... Not to mention countless departures from smaller fires each day from north to south.

Given the scale of the phenomenon, four planes from the EU firefighting fleet were sent to France from Greece and Sweden, following a request from the French authorities, the European Commission announced.

Italy will also send "several Canadair", tweeted Emmanuel Macron in the afternoon. The President of the Republic spoke by telephone with the head of the Italian government, Mario Draghi, "to coordinate on the reinforcements", it was specified in his entourage.

In addition, firefighting teams from Germany, Poland, Austria and Romania are on their way to support French firefighters under the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, the Commission said.

“European solidarity is at work!”, welcomed French President Emmanuel Macron in a tweet announcing this European aid.
