Vladimir Putin presents the first vaccine against Covid-19, "Sputnik V", tested on his daughter

An anti-Covid-19 vaccine has been developed by the Gamaleïa Institute, a state research center located in Moscow, Vladimir Putin announced on Tuesday. Called "Sputnik V", it was inoculated into the daughter of the Russian president.

It is touted as the first anti-Covid-19 vaccine. Vladimir Putin announced Tuesday August 11 that Russia had granted regulatory approval to a product dubbed "Sputnik V", in reference to the first artificial Earth satellite launched by the Soviet Union in 1957. Developed by the Gamaleïa Institute - a State research center located in Moscow which works in collaboration with the Ministry of Defense -, it is the subject of so-called "phase III" trials, that is to say tests on thousands of participants.

"This morning, for the first time in the world, a vaccine against the new coronavirus was registered," Vladimir Putin said, adding: "I know that it is quite effective, that it gives lasting immunity."

The president even claimed that one of his daughters had been inoculated with the vaccine. "She took part in the experiment," he said, adding that she had had a little temperature, "and that's it".

The health ministry said that the double inoculation "made it possible to form a long immunity", estimating that it could last "two years".

"The most important thing, of course, is that we can ensure unconditional safety in the future as to the use of this vaccine and its effectiveness," President Putin said again, "I hope it will." .

Russian Health Minister Mikhail Murashko said "clinical trials involving several thousand people will continue".

This vaccine will be put into circulation on January 1, 2021, according to the National Drug Registry of the Ministry of Health, consulted by Russian news agencies.
