The confinement had a heavy impact on the physical condition of Moroccan sportsmen

Confined to confining themselves during the state of emergency, athletes of all disciplines were prey to the loss of endurance and the decrease in muscle mass, said the technical director of the Moroccan National Olympic Committee , Hassan Fekkak.

If a 45-minute jogging remains the best way to work on endurance, athletes were content during confinement to the exercise bike (1:30) to perform their cardio sessions, essential to improve physical and technical performance, stressed Fekkak.

He added that many athletes who do not have an exercise bike have limited themselves to simple rope jump exercises, which in turn help improve performance but remain insufficient for top athletes.

During confinement, athletes were unable to perform explosive exercises to work on the intensity of the effort which can be increasing, decreasing or even fluctuating, said Fekkak, noting that home training do not allow athletes to reach the desired intensity level.

These home training, Fekkak continues, also had a negative impact on the technical level of the athletes, especially in disciplines that require collective training such as judo and wrestling.

Deprived of competitiveness, some martial arts practitioners including karatekas and taekwondoists lose their speed and liveliness, said the technical director, adding that these athletes lose, over time, the speed of reaction in attack or defense they have sharpened before, and find it more difficult to ensure good support on the mat.

He also explained that in the case of certain sports such as swimming, the training of which cannot be carried out outside swimming pools, the confinement had a negative impact on the physical condition of the athletes, which is manifested by a loss of rhythm in the lack of group training and above all a loss of the volume of muscle mass, he added.

Fekkak believes that before resuming training and competitions, technical managers and coaches should subject their athletes, especially in team sports, to physical tests to assess their endurance, heart rate and muscle mass. Thus the evaluation will be able to make a comparison between the pre-confinement period and that post-confinement in order to program an appropriate and specific training for each athlete according to the training carried out during the confinement and the level reached, did he noted.

He added that these tests, which are carried out according to scientific standards, make it possible to measure the heart rate during exercise, endurance, explosiveness and maximum oxygen consumption (VO2 max), and this for avoid the occurrence of complications during training implemented after confinement. The technical director concluded that sports success is mainly based on the physique that develops during training but also on the mind that is forged through competitions and on self-confidence that is strengthened through recognition of efforts.
