French President Emmanuel Macron announced Thursday evening a package of measures aimed at containing the spread of the Corona virus in the country. Macron asked people over the age of seventy to limit their movement to the lowest possible level, and announced the closure of schools, kindergartens and universities from Monday 16 March until further notice. But Macron confirmed that the country's first round of municipal elections will be held on schedule, which is Sunday 15 March.
French President Emmanuel Macron addressed a televised address to his country's citizens, in which he called on the French to cooperate and collaborate in tackling the spread of the Corona virus "Covid-19".
Macron asked people over the age of seventy to stay indoors and restrict their movement as closely as possible.
He also announced the closure of schools, kindergartens and universities from Monday 16 March until further notice, considering that children contribute significantly to the transmission of the disease between French families.
On the other hand, Macron confirmed that the first round of the French municipal elections will be held on time on Sunday 15 March, and said that the government and the various political parties have not seen what prevents the French from casting their votes, taking safety measures into consideration.
The French President also stressed that public transport will not stop, because that would "stop the country 's wheel", calling for economic measures at the European Union level to face the effects of the epidemic.
"We will respond vigorously and quickly," Macron said. "All European governments have to make decisions in support of economic activity and recovery decisions, no matter the cost."
He added that he would ask the US President, who currently heads the G7, to prepare an "exceptional" initiative to stand up to the economic repercussions of the disease.
The French President stressed that there is no closure of the borders at the present time, although this is likely to be necessary, but he considered that any measure of this kind should be taken at the level of the European Union.
